What was the inspiration behind your work?
I was inspired by large-scale artwork such as Cy Twombly. Furthermore, I was inspired by Pablo Picasso, and his utilization of different paint consistencies as the medium’s qualities. This assisted in creating a sense of depth and overall, fun and unique artwork.
Tell us about the creative process you took with your work.
The creative process I took while creating this piece was very different from my usual technique and style. I thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with the composition of colour and shapes. Due to the large piece of material, I had to lie the fabric on the ground. This was an interesting process, as I was required to walk over my artwork to effectively apply the paint. Throughout the process of creating this artwork, I employed a layering technique. This included painting different blocks of colours, then allowing drying time before applying the next line or shape.
What advice would you have to Stage 2 Visual Arts students in 2020?
Dedicate at least two days a week to focus on art mainly. In Year 12, I found it most effective to pump out 2-3 pages at a time as I was focused and found a consistent groove where I could create and explore. Then have a few days break, because some other subjects are more material demanding. Although, don’t put other subjects first or last – make an equal balance.
What pathway have you taken after your SACE?
This Year I took a gap year and was planning on travelling to Europe for four months. However, due to coronavirus I am now unable to do this. So next semester I plan on starting Viniculture at Adelaide University and hopefully travel next year.
