Stage 2 Music Explorations
These web pages connect schools and teachers to information on procedures relating to final moderation and external assessment requirements. Key dates, including dates for the submission of results, are also provided.
Stage 2 Music Explorations is a 20-credit subject.

Online moderation and marking
School assessment materials for Stage 2 Music Explorations will be submitted for online moderation using school assessment results sheets in Schools Online.
External assessment materials for Stage 2 Music Explorations will be submitted for online marking using investigation results sheets in Schools Online.

School assessment component
Teachers assess the evidence of student learning for:
- Assessment Type 1: Musical Literacy
- Assessment Type 2: Explorations.
The SACE Board quality assures the school assessment results through final moderation.

Moderation sample selection
Teachers select the moderation sample of school-assessed materials to submit to the SACE Board.

Submitting school assessment materials for final moderation

Supervision and verification
Refer to the information in Supervision and Verification of Students’ Work: Policy and Procedures [DOC 90KB] on the use of the record sheet [DOC 164KB] to record and authenticate each student’s work. If used, these sheets are to be kept in the school until the end of the clerical check period in February 2022.
A teacher who is unable to verify that the work is the student’s own must initiate a breach of rules action through the school’s SACE/NTCET coordinator.

External assessment component
Students undertake one creative connections task, in which they synthesise their learning in this subject from their explorations, experimentation, and development of their musical literacy skills, to present a final creative work (performance, composition, or arrangement) and a discussion of that work.
In the discussion, students reflect on and critique their creative work, and how it has been informed by the work of others.
A creative work that is a performance should be between 6 to 8 minutes. It must be recorded for assessment, and may be presented to a live audience.
A creative work that is a composition or arrangement should be between 3 to 4 minutes. It may be notated using standard and/or graphic notation, and/or be recorded in digital audio format.
The discussion should be in oral and/or multimodal form, to a maximum of 7 minutes or equivalent.

Submitting materials for external assessment

Assessment Type 3: Creative Connections
This assessment type is categorised as an investigation for operational purposes.
Investigation materials for Music Explorations are submitted online.
The teacher assesses each student’s creative connections task and then submits all creative connections tasks to the SACE Board for external assessment.
Supervision and verification
Teachers are advised to refer to Supervision and Verification of Students’ Work: Policy and Procedures [DOC 90KB] and must use the record sheet [DOC 164KB] to record and authenticate each student’s work. These sheets are to be kept in the school until the end of the clerical check period in February 2022.
A teacher who is unable to verify that a practical investigation, or part of a practical investigation, is the student’s own work must submit a completed report of potential breach of rules [DOC 108KB] to the SACE Board, through the school’s SACE/NTCET coordinator.
