Overview
Our mathematics subjects deepen students’ knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematics, and the use of mathematical models.
Students learn to identify the limitations of mathematical methods and their impacts, leading to a better understanding of the world.
Mathematics is a foundation for further studies and careers in mathematical sciences, engineering, computer science and physical sciences.
The following subjects are offered:
Students broaden their mathematical experience and have many opportunities to use mathematics for problem solving. Learners increase their understanding of functions, calculus, statistics, mathematical arguments and proofs, and using mathematical models.
Stage 1 Mathematics provides foundation skills for further study in Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics at Stage 2.
Students develop an increasingly complex understanding of calculus and statistics from this subject. They use the principles of calculus to understand their physical world, and use statistics to analyse uncertain and variable situations.
University pathways and careers can include economics, computer sciences, and the sciences. The subject also prepares students for courses and careers that may involve the use of statistics, such as health or social sciences.
Students deepen their skills, knowledge and understanding of mathematics. They learn to use mathematical arguments and proofs, and use and develop mathematical models. The subject includes the study of functions, calculus, complex numbers, vectors and mathematical induction.
This subject is a pathway to mathematical sciences, engineering, space science, and laser physics.
Specialist Mathematics is designed to be studied in conjunction with Mathematical Methods.
This subject looks at mathematics for business, and students extend their skills through practical problem-solving. Learners apply their skills to managing personal finances, statistical investigations, and mathematical modelling.
